Answers to Common Questions

By James | December 30, 2007

They are kind of rhetorical, but I assume that is because nobody has a reasonable answer to them. Some of the questions annoy me, which is why I am answering them in hopes that people will stop using them. Please understand that some of these answers are just for your entertainment and may seem closed minded or ignorant. Some may not be serious answers and others may be very serious- that’s for you to decide! Enjoy!

1. Why do bad things happen to good people, and visa-versa?
Because of free will. Bad people have the freedom to do bad things to good people. Maybe the homeless guy that you gave $5 is a convicted murderer. It’s the same reason good things happen to good people, and bad things to bad people.

2. Which came first: the chicken or the egg?
Obviously the chicken came first out of the two. The chicken egg is produced by the chicken. The chicken was gradually produced through a process called “Evolution.” The non-chicken creature might have been a mammal.

The evolutionary chart goes like this: Non-chicken -> Chicken -> Egg -> Omelette.

Consider this problem unscrambled.

3. Why doesn’t God heal amputees?
Assuming God is real and that I understand his reasoning, it would be because amputees are not sick. They are missing a limb but are not usually affected by any illness. They can still enjoy life and can move around like everyone else [thanks to science]. If the amputation caused some kind of illness, like blood poisoning, then God/science is able to heal them.

Please don’t get accidental amputation confused with willful amputation. I think the question should be: Why doesn’t God heal people who willfully amputate themselves? There is definitely some kind of illness in self-mutilation.

4. If a tree falls in a forest, and nobody is around, does it make a sound?
Yes. The collision of the tree against the ground will emit sound waves. Your presence has no direct influence on this process. It’s simple physics.

5. Why me?
The law of probability is not a conscious being capable of thinking. Instead, one should ask “How me?” And the answer to that is, “by chance.”

6. Why did the chicken cross the road?
In hopes that people on the other side would not question his motives.

7. Why does everything taste like chicken?
Because you have never eaten anything that did not taste like chicken, like pizza.

8. If God is loving, why are there still starving people in the world?
Assuming God is real and that I understand his reasoning, it would be because of the same reason as question #1: Free Will. God might have given us food to freely eat, but some of us choose not to share that food. Third world economies may have collapsed because bad things happen to good people (1).

Someone (I forgot his name, but some guy on YouTube) once put it like this: God presented you with a table full of food. Half of the room runs to the food and fights for it, pushing and shoving. They fill themselves with food while the other half of the room is pushed away and can’t get to the food. The half eating at the table have the nerve to ask, “why are there hungry people in this room?”

9. What is another word for “thesaurus?”

Lexicon.

10. Who built the pyramids?

Pyramid builders.

Hi, James. I saw you on Steve Pavlina’s forum.

    Funny article.

You seem to be open to corrections, so I have a few. Firstly, you may want to know have a small typo on your about page. Look for “ignostic”. You could also use a contact form such as the one I use on my site. Try here: blue-anvil.com/archives/secure-and-accessible-php-contact-form-for-wordpress

Best of luck with your adventures.

    Thanks for writing in Kekoa.

Ignostic is in fact a word.

But I appreciate the help! I have also thought about doing a contact form, thank you for reminding me!

Well, waddaya know. It is a word.

I only thought it was a typo because it wasn’t in OS X’s dictionary. Go figure. Must be a newer word.
