America - It’s a couple of continents.
By James | July 10, 2007
“I don’t get why so many countries hate America, this is the greatest country in the world!” Bob says as he takes a huge bite out of his Juicy, Grade-A, All American, Classic Bacon Double Cheeseburger.
“Must be Bush”, Jack replies.
“Yeah, definitely Bush”, Bob says.
If all of that looks perfectly fine to you, we have some stuff to work on. I have seen countless people like this, these so called “patriots”, so ignorant of so many things and refuse to take the blame for the rest of the world hating them. If you laughed, or found the irony, congratulations- you’re on your way to a new life. I’ll point out the flaws in the skit above, and maybe throw in some more.
First is the fact that we use “America” to represent the U.S. We say things like “America is the greatest country in the world” or we refer to the flag as the “American flag”. Guess what? America is a continent. In fact, there are two of them! There is no flag for America, there is a flag for a small part of America, known as the United States of America. I have talked to many people from all across the world, they really don’t appreciate the fact that we call ourselves “America” instead of the “Unites States of America”, so it’s not just me talking out of my ass. I used to refer to us as America as well, until they pointed it out to me and it made perfect sense. Maybe try using “U.S.” unless you are including the many other countries of North and South America.
The second thing that really gets to me, and other countries, is our ego. We claim that we have the greatest country in the world. How do you know? Have you been to all of the other countries? Can you name the other countries? Can you even name 2 countries in America? People make that statement because other people make it. There’s a man on Youtube by the name of Emmigree who said “What do we mean by greatness? Why do we have to be the greatest? Why not the most peaceful, or the most goodliest?” Seems to me like greatness is just a general term to imply we are better at everything, we are certainly not better even in most ways.
Of course we have the combination of fast foot and brainwashing consumers with flavorful words. Flavored words are used throughout the world of course, but we can be proud of the fact that we have spread “Genetically Modified Irradiated Big Macs” to the rest of humanity. Certainly to give them good “food” and create jobs. Yup yup.
We can’t forget about our great responsibilities. We elect Bush (2 times!) then blame him for all of our mistakes. Ignorance isn’t always bliss. Look at the time-line of Bush approval ratings. You will find that the large spikes of approval happen during tragedies and large events. Every time something bad happens, we turn to Mr. President, then when it doesn’t go well, we blame him again. He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed; in fact, he’s more of a wheelbarrow, but his flaws are very obvious. If people would not listen to everything the media tells them and trust the government without thinking for themselves, they will see that the citizens made this choice.
I’m not Anti-U.S. in any way. I love the country that we were founded on, but not the country we have become. We have become a nation full of pollution, egotism, terrorism, ignorance, stupidity, and lies. We can’t keep blaming the government for our own mistakes, we need to take responsibility and use our own minds to make decisions. Stop listening to the media for once and use a little logic.

As far as i am concerned we might as well call ourselves America. Australia has other countries on its continent but nobody cares that they are simply called Australia. Would they still care if we simplified our name to just America? If they do then they need to check themselves, because they do not care that Australia is simply Australia. (no offense to Australia)Furthermore two other countries located on the continents of North America and South America would be Argentina (south) and Nicaragua (north) Naturally there is also Canada and Mexico, however the way Mexicans run across our border i do not think we can truly say they are a sovereign and stable nation. As for us calling ourselves the best… well… we are… Name another counrty that people will give their life to get to. A country that people pay their whole life savings, hide in a shipping container, just to get a chance of sneaking in to get a very low paying job. There are no other countries people are willing to take such large risks for. As for the last part i agree. Most Americans (not united-staters) tend to be stupid. At the very least many simply refuse to think…

“As for us calling ourselves the best… well… we are… Name another counrty that people will give their life to get to.”
So the measure of a country’s greatness is how much others want to be there…right. If you’re going to go on opinions, you need to consider other ones too- such as the extremely popular opinion in the Middle East that the United States is a pompous, egotistical country that believes it can do whatever it wants because it’s “the greatest.”

take responsibility? impossible! the US’ whole existence is based upon not taking responsibility of our own actions. that’s christianity in a nut shell. do whatever you want, and christ will forgive you. if you do something bad, the devil made you do it and all you have to do is ask for forgiveness. no personal growth involved! free of responsibility!

We’re called America because thats part of our name. If we were just ‘the united states’, with no ‘of america’, your point would be valid.
Incidentally, I’d like to point out that Australia doesn’t have any other countries on its island continent — everything there is Australia.

Hey Bill, your claim is debatable but not worth debating. I give up on explaining this.
Anyway, I’m not expert on geography, but isn’t New Zealand and New Guinea part of the Australian continent? I’m not making claims, just asking a question.
